About:概要
We live in exciting times. In the entire history of Popular Music fans have never had so many ways in which to consume our passion than we have right now. Technology has brought millions and millions of songs, videos, performances, as well as related items such as artwork, opinion, and information, just a click away.
Armed with this technology, our music consumption habits have been changing rapidly over the last decade. We are increasingly becoming highly individualised in our listening, yet well all share a common bond in our love of noise. I’m interested in the ways we differ, and in the ways we are all the same.
It is my belief that no two people have ever listened to music in precisely the same way, and I think this is particularly, increasingly true today. Some of us may use technology or services common to many others, or we may listen to music on the same type of journeys, or in similar spaces, and for similar reasons, but each of us nevertheless creates our own, unique patchwork from what is available to us. The Harkive Project wants to find out how and why you listen to music in the way that you do, and how the devices, technologies, formats, services and time available to you are combined to create your personal listening experience.
On 9th July 2013 I will be gathering stories from music fans across the globe in order to create a unique snapshot of the many listening cultures, habits and practices that exist on that day. I want to repeat this process every year and map how these change over time. My hope is that the results of my analysis into the responses to various instances of Harkive develop into a useful, informative and interesting resource for anyone interested in Popular Music. In order for this to happen, I need your help: I’d like you to tell me your story.

What is The Harkive Project?
The Harkive Project is being undertaken as the final part of my MA Music Industries studies at Birmingham City University, England. I have made digital music the focus of my studies and have previously conducted research into new business models and consumption practices. Harkive represents the culmination of these activities, and also the beginning of a new phase of post-graduate research. My intention is for Harkive to become an annual event in the music cultural calendar, and each year I hope to gather responses from music fans with the intention of mapping new, emerging and disappearing trends as they reveal themselves over time. If you’d like to know more about the project, or about me, then please feel free to email me.
Harkive
What sort of information and stories does The Harkive Project want?
I am interested in the How, Why and Where. I am less interested in the What.
I would like to know how, why and where you listened to music on 9th July 2013. I am equally interested in the devices, technology, services and formats you use as I am in the places, locations, journeys and situations you were in whilst listening. You might, for example, describe how you listened to music on your commute to work, or how you sat in a park and heard music coming from a distant window. I am interested in the minute details of your listening experience; the way in which you heard it, where you were at the time, and how it made you feel.
Can I see some examples of the kind of information and stories The Harkive Project wants?
Between now and 9th July there will be numerous examples posted to the Harkive blog and then added to the Example Stories page. These examples are merely intended to point you in the right general direction and should not be viewed as templates. Beyond the fact that I want to hear your listening story there is no right or wrong way to make a contribution. You can’t write too much, or too little.
I don’t think my story will be very interesting. Should I still contribute?
Everyone who listens to music on 9th July 2013 will have a unique story. Each of these individual stories will combine to create a snapshot of how we all listened on 9th July 2013. There is nothing boring about that.
Why should I contribute?
It is my hope that the results of The Harkive Project will develop into a fascinating and useful resource for anyone interested in Popular Music. I hope we will all learn about the culture in which we participate, and your contribution will help make that happen. In addition to this, and as an extra incentive, I have secured a number of items from musicians, record labels and other companies working within the music industries, and by contributing to Harkive you will automatically be entered into a draw. Once the 2013 instance of the Harkive Project is complete, names will be drawn at random and the prizes will be distributed.
